Dark and taunting memories looped in endless circles as Wilny slept. The faces slicing into sharp focus against mismatched hallways, a huge black shadow running its talons down the back of his neck. Spinning around he tried to catch sight of the face of the Frigatebird only to fall backwards through the darkness.

A jarring pain shot across his back as he hit the floor, trapping a wing beneath him sparking bright flashes of white before his eyes. Gulping for air, Wilny slammed his fists down against the carpet, digging his nails into the fibres and letting the rough feeling anchor him back in reality.

The deep blue shadows of his and Raoul’s room grew slowly into focus, lightly illuminated from the white streetlamps outside. His eyes adjusted to the low light as he counted beneath his breath in order to calm himself down. He was so hot he felt sick and had been sweating so much that his feathers were soaking wet. The bed sheets were in a tangled knot around his feet and the pillows were cast across the floor.

“Just a dream.” He assured himself, untangling his legs from the sheets and tossing them into the laundry basket. “Just a dream.”

He looked round to Raoul who lay face down in his bed. The streak of fur down his spine was bristled in his sleep, one leg hanging off the bed while he hugged a pillow so tightly it looked like it would burst. It seemed Wilny wasn’t the only one having bad dreams.

Not wanting to go back to sleep, he picked up his reading glasses and wandered to the bathroom to wash his face. Then went down to the kitchen in search of some honey and to find a book to read to distract himself.

Surprisingly, the living room was dark and absent of Beth who was usually awake all night, though he put it down to being a rare occasion her actually having gone to sleep. He picked a book out in the low light, scoffing at the title as he found it to be one of the trashy-romance novels that Kat loved to read, and taking it with him to the kitchen.

The kitchen light was on, but the room was empty and the sliding doors to the decking outside open wide, letting a cold refreshing summer breeze in.

A prickle of suspicion ran down his spine and quietly he removed a knife from the rack and padded softly to the doors. A hulking dark shadow sat on the stairs, huge dark wings draped back across the decking and staring up to the sky with a shaggy mane of hair.

‘Frigatebird!’ his still nightmare startled brain screamed, but on approach the feathers were dark brown with an edge of creamy white to every single one and a glossy plum sheen to the feathers between his shoulders. He didn’t recognise the colours.

The figure turned, hearing the sharp rustling scrape of Wilny’s tailfeathers as they brushed against the wood, sweeping a wing across the decking.
